Crisis care has a list of organisations that offer emergency refuge services. These are for Women only, but some transgender people may be able to access these women based services. Transgender people should speak to the refuge first.
Gay men or other Transgendered people who feel that accessing a woman's service is not suitable for them (or have been denied access to a service), should still contact crisis care for a list of emergency/alternative places to stay. But it needs to be pointed out that the places offered will not be domestic abuse refuge services.
There are currently no refuge services for any men in WA escaping domestic abuse regardless of sexuality (this includes straight men) and certainly no specific refuges for people who identify as - or are of a gender other than female. Gay men and transgendered people can access low cost emergency accommodation. If you feel that these places will not be suitable or make you feel unsafe. We can only advise that you seek the support of friends and family or pay for accommodation and ensure your safety as a first step.
SSDAG are continuing to work hard to improve DSG domestic abuse services in WA. Please don't be discouraged. We are also supporting the DSG community to step in and develop abuse training, and are encouraged by the new awareness and willingness in the DSG community to improve services. We are also updating this website to offer more and better referals in November, including more information from WA Police. We want to emphasise that SSDAG have presented DSG domestic abuse training to many DV services in WA in the last year, and there is therefore greater awareness of DSG domestic abuse issues than before.
