WA Police united
against domestic violence in same sex relationships with a stand at
Fair Day during this year’s annual 2009 Pride Month celebrations.
Taking the
opportunity to raise awareness about domestic violence and attract
recruits, Indigenous and Community Diversity Unit coordinated with
representatives from Central Metropolitan District, Recruitment Branch,
Geraldton Police Station, and members of the Gay and Lesbian Police
Employees Network and the Same Sex Domestic Abuse Group (SSDAG) to
operate the stand. SSDAG Chairman Mark Ravenscroft said domestic
violence victims in same-sex relationships were often hesitant to
approach police.
“Today’s partnership
is one step towards increasing community confidence in police and this
should have an impact on levels of reporting,” he said. Pride Month
runs from late September until the end of October, and includes a range
of festivals and activity days. For more information go to the Pride WA
website.
